Our new Kon-tiki 675 features a Dometic RMD 10 series refrigerator. This high capacity fridge freezer has a total capacity of 177 litres. These figures relate to 142 litres for the fridge and 35 litres for the freezer compartment. Most importantly for the motorhomer, this is a three way fridge, operating on gas, mains electric or DC supply from the vehicle battery when driving. On mains, the fridge requires around 250 watts of power, so approximately one amp. The previous RMD8555 model that we owned took less power, around 170 watts or 0.8 amps.
So what makes this refrigerator special?

No, your eyes are not tricking you! A key feature of the Dometic RMD 10 series refrigerator is the door – or doors to be precise. Both doors feature a twin hinge system allowing the door to open to the left or to the right without modification! There is no requirement to change the hinge and no tools are necessary. The user simply opens the door from either the left or the right giving the motorhomer great flexibility. For example, in our “675”, we use the right hand handle when arriving at the fridge from the lounge. Similarly, when accessing the fridge from the kitchen, we use the left hand handle! It’s pure genius and nothing else.
We have a short video available of the Motorhome Voyager You Tube channel.
Furthermore, the fridge features a flat front rather than the more traditional bowed front as found in most motorhome and caravan fridges. We think this gives the fridge a very sleek look.
Dometic RMD 10 series refrigerator – an inside view
At the top, we have the 35 litre freezer compartment. The Dometic website makes claim to keeping the temperature at -20C in the freezer compartment when the ambient temperature is 32C. Indeed, we can confirm that on hot days in Italy, our ice cream was just that – ice cream! Likewise, the fridge was cold, very COLD, even in hot weather. Regular readers may recall we fitted fridge vans to our 8 series fridge to help cooling in hot weather. Why not have a read of this article about the fridge fans?

The fridge has three adjustable wire shelves. There are eight different height settings for the shelves. We use the bottom of the fridge to store our wine and spirit collection. More over, the shelves can be fitted tilted towards the back of the fridge – the Dometic manual gives limitations on this arrangement and this set up is not to be used “on the move”.
In summary, the Dometic RMD 10 series refrigerator is a sleek looking fridge that gave excellent performance in hot weather. Further details are here on the Dometic website.
