The Julier Pass had long been another one of those “things to do with the motorhome”. After checking the weather forecast and road conditions, today was the day!  The pass was opened about two hundred years ago and is pretty much open all year round. This is the opposite of the St Gotthard Pass and various others that either close frequently with the weather or close for the season. The Julier Pass is approximately twenty-eight miles long and runs from  Tiefencastel to Silvaplana. The pass rises to 2284 metres above sea level.

The journey to the Julier Pass from Innsbruck is toll-free all the way, avoiding the Austrian motorways and thus no requirement for a Go Box. Essentially, we left Innsbruck, passed through Telfs, Imst and towards Pfunds, taking in low-priced Austrian diesel before crossing the border into Switzerland.

A trip on the cable car at St Moritz, followed by a drive over the Julier Pass to Bivio! Fantastic!

Actions speak louder than words, so sit back and enjoy the journey to St Moritz, from Innsbruck.

Snow fall on the Julier Pass

The following morning, after a very comfortable night at Bivio, snow was starting to fall. As a result, we left post-haste, and had breakfast in the valley, where the weather quickly improved. We can highly recommend this route and journey for those seeking winter-scenery. The Bivio stellplatz is a good stopover – read the MV review here.
