On arrival in Pompeii, we headed first to Camping Spartacus, where we had stayed in 2011. The site was very busy, but they “had one last place”. It would be tight pitching, but worthy of a shot. Once pitched, the manager noted we had about ten feet of space on one side and asked if he could put a small tent there, if needed. We said it would be OK, but moments later, a motorhome appeared in that space, so we decided to leave as there was simply no space between units. Next door, we found the Fortuna Village. Fortuna Village is a “complex” of a pizzeria, car park, camping spaces and bungalows. The rates are higher than some sites, but the pitch was HUGE, at least 12 metres by 12 metres.

Exceptionally clean facilities at Fortuna Village

It’s hard to describe the Fortuna Village as a campsite. It is more like a motorhome aire or a camper stop, but, the facilities on site include:

  • Good sized pitched with 6 amps electric
  • Toilets/showers – spotlessly clean
  • Laundry/pot wash
  • Motorhome service point
  • Free wi-fi
  • Chemical disposal point

This campsite costs 27 euro per night at weekend, and 20 euro per night during the week. However, given the space available and the “open feeling”, it is worth the premium. On the down side, the railway line is at the rear of the site, although trains were a few per hour, rather than every few minutes. There is a Carrefour supermarket and an Auchan hypermarket within walking distance.

We had a problem with an invasion of ants during our stay – no doubt this could have happened anywhere in the hot, dry conditions, and so not likely to be just an incursion whilst staying at Fortuna Village.

Interestingly, the “bungalows” were available on a hourly basis on something called “Matrimoniale in Day Use”. A car would arrive, two people go into the bungalow and then they would emerge shortly afterwards….

Warning – risk of grounding or “bottoming out” due to the sloping access to the site.

Update, spring 2016. Fortuna Village is now in the ACSI scheme and so low-cost camping rates are available at certain times of the year.
